I had planned on posting about another topic this week; something useful that I have discovered to help make the work day a little easier, but something happened that has left me basically incapacitated today so I have been in too much pain to spend much time at the keyboard or concentrate long enough to finish the post. This one will probably be short and sweet. Hopefully I can finish my originally scheduled post sometime later in the week.
When I was getting ready for bed last night I was caught completely off guard by this terrible neck pain that radiated into my shoulder, back, and all the way down my left arm. It was a sharp piercing pain unlike anything I’ve experienced before. It is similar to the pain that you get with a “crick” in your neck, when you can’t move it a certain direction. I actually have that too and can’t turn my neck to the left. I have experienced that part many times before, but the radiating pain into other areas is something completely new to me. When I woke up today, not only was it still there but it is now affecting my right arm too but the radiating pain in my right arm doesn’t go down as far as it does on the left side.
I have had cervical spine problems for years but I don’t talk about it as much as my other chronic pain because up until now it hasn’t been as severe. Also, considering my husband’s neck issues and failed cervical fusion surgery, it just hasn’t seemed like something significant enough to mention often and it hasn’t affected my daily life in nearly the extreme way that Billy’s spine issues have and continue to do on a daily basis.
I hope to God that this is just something temporary that will pass quickly because I seriously don’t think I can handle another source of severe, permanent, chronic pain. The strange thing is that I didn’t do ANYTHING to cause this pain to start. I didn’t lift anything heavy or do any strenuous exercise that could’ve caused it. It also couldn’t have started because I slept wrong because I was fine when I woke up yesterday morning. Just out of nowhere around 11:00 pm last night, BAM, it started.
This is frightening to me because that is very similar to how my facial pain started. Just out of nowhere one day it began and never went away. Naturally I am afraid that this will turn out that way too, but hopefully it won’t.
I already know that I have moderate to severe neural foraminal narrowning/stenosis, a few bone spurs, a bulging disc, an old compression fracture, degenerative disc disease, and a few other cervical spine issues that were discovered on a MRI earlier this year. My pain specialist believes that my spine issues could be the cause of my facial pain. The neurologist who ordered the MRI doesn’t agree with her but I do because there has always been a correlation between my neck pain and my facial pain. When one flares up, the other does too, but the neck pain usually isn’t this severe and normally feels different.
A chiropractor recently told me that on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being the least severe and 10 being the most severe neck problems that he has ever seen for someone my age, my neck would rank a 9. I didn’t continue treatment with him because he works for one of those clinics that want you to commit to months and months of treatment and pay up front, even if your health insurance covers chiropractic treatment.
If this doesn’t resolve on its own, I may have to break down and see someone though because this HURTS!!! I can barely move my left arm, which is going to make it very difficult to drive or do anything. Unfortunately, I will have to hold out for as long as possible though because I had to take our dog Brach to the vet yesterday, which was an unexpected expense for this pay period and I also have to take my husband to the doctor later in the week, due to some issues with his foot (bruising around the veins in his foot/ankle and swelling that has been there for way too long and won’t go away). For now, I will just have to find a way to work around this because we really can’t afford another doctor appointment right now and I’m sure there isn’t much they could do about it anyway.
Well, this is about all of the typing that I can tolerate at the moment. My neck, shoulder, and arm are killing me and the fingers on my left hand are getting tingly. I have no idea how I am going to make it through the work day tomorrow. This additional pain is making me sick to my stomach. Hopefully I will wake up tomorrow and it will be gone but unfortunately I sort of doubt that will happen. My luck is never that good.
Wishing you all a pain free week! 🙂
